¡¡ Modern science has brought so many changes that
there is hardly anything in our daily lives which is
not different from what it was in the past. Perhaps
the greatest change of all, though, is not in how we
live but in how long we live. People generally live
longer than they used to, and this is surely a change
for the better. But even improvements can create problems.
The increase in the average length of life has created
a serious one: there are more and more old people,
so how can they be taken care of?
¡¡ Every advanced country must answer this question.
The problem is particularly serious in Japan, where
the average length of life is now the highest in the
world. The number of people who are over 65 years old
is increasing faster in Japan than anywhere else. The
passing of time will mean that there are more and more
elderly people in need of special care.
¡¡ In Japanese society, taking care of parents as they
grow old has been the responsibility of the eldest
son. Changes in living conditions --- especially larger
cities and smaller homes --- are changing this too:
in 1960, about 80 percent of elderly parents lived
with their children; in 1983, less than 67 percent
did so. Other ways of providing homes and care for
the old must therefore be found. A society can be judged
according to the way it takes care of those who can
no longer take care of themselves. |
